Mammootty is an award winning Indian actor who works mainly in Malayalam Cinema. During a career spanning more than quarter of a century, he has acted in more than 300 films as lead actor, and has been successful in both mainstream and parallel cinema. his first film was Devalokam, but it never released. One of the great figures in Malayalam film industry, M. T. Vasudevan Nair discovered him and it was veteran director K G George who brought up Mammootty as an actor. K G George’s films like Yavanika and other films like Vilkanunde Swapnangal and Valarthumrigangal made him noticeable.

His career saw a spectacular rise after the release of Joshi’s New Delhi. Mammootty was fortunate to have got the chances to portray the meaty roles of M T Vasudevan Nair’s (M T) characters. M T’s films like Aalkootathil Thaniye catapulted him to new realms of stardom. His controlled acting, never crossing the limits, and his presentation of M T ‘s dialogues, which were always pregnant with meaning, gave Malayalam cinema a new concept of hero. His Oru CBI Diary kurippe, brought  a new concept of villainy, fresh presentation of politicians and above all a refreshing idea of hero. His theatrical representation of a Tamil Brahmin CBI officer is simply brilliant.

Mammootty won his first national award for his excellent performance in Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, again an M T creation. For his performance in Vidheyan, Ponthan Mada by veteran film maker Adoor Gopalakrishnan he bagged his second national award. His national presence was once again felt after Jabbar Patel’s Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar. So realistic was his performance that it was reported thousands who watched the shooting of the film were in tears after the shooting. No wonder, he again bagged the coveted Rajat Kamal for best acting.

Manjil Virinja Pookkal is a Malayalam blockbuster movie released in 1980 directed by Fazil and featuring newcomers Mohanlal, Poornima Jayaram and Shankar. This movie was one of the biggest hits of the year and was a major landmark in the career of young director Fazil. The music of the film was also a major hit and many consider Jerry Amaldev’s music for this movie to be among his best.

Plot

The story is about Prem Kishan (Shankar) falling in love with Prabha (Poornima Jayaram) whom he knows very little about. Later on he realises that she was already married when her husband, Narendran (Mohanlal) comes into the picture. Mohanlal plays the villain in this film, one of the many negative characters he has played in his career. The film ends on a sad note, with Prem Kishan committing suicide after killing Narendran, saddened by the loss of Prabha, who was killed by the same Narendran.

Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair

Mohan Lal, who has been around for nearly two decades now, made his debut in Manjil Virinja Pookkal. Though he fist appeared as a villain, he nevertheless left an indelible mark in the minds of audience. A large number of Malayalees loves to watch films like Nadodikatte, Sanmanasullavarkke Samadhanam etc again and again for the pure fun, of course with a message too, it offers. Mohal Lal in such comic roles smoothly brought to his face puerile expressions. Equally stunning was his timing and down-to-earth dialogue delivery. Mohan Lal the comic hero came into full blossom in typical Priyadarshan films like Chitram, Kilukkam etc. In fact even before he discovered himself as a comic hero, he roared on the screen as a gangster in Rajavinte Makan. In a remarkable performance, he depicted the different contours of an underworld don. The huge success of the film set a trend. His role of Sethu Madhavan, who dreams of becoming a police officer but ends up as a criminal in the film Kireedam became a classic tragedy in Indian cinema. It got him the Special Jury award at the annual National awards. Another role of a classical singer who is burdened by the jealousy and final death of his singer brother in Bharatham helped him bag the Best actor award at the same awards next year.

A perfectionist he is believed to have learned Kathakali to attain perfection in the role of Kathakali artiste, Kunhikuttan in Vanaprastahm. Even the genuine Kathakali artistes were amused to see Mohal Lal identifying himself with the complex mudras and bhavas of a Kathakali artiste on screen. True to his humble nature, Mohan Lal dedicated the National Award he won for the second time to those Kahtakali artistes.
